Ok here we go again, my headlight works up and down. Just when down it makes a clicking noise? My guse is the down is getting nonstop power or w/e. Before I toggle switch it any thoughts?

FYI I have 3 wire motors, previuos owner started to change motors so wires were cut by motors I just spliced em and I got em hooked up to the right colors. He had a 2 wire he started to put in one side. I have some 3 wire off a parts car I am putting in atm. Will find out shortly if other side does same, also gonna keep the batt off till i figure this out.

ok both motors work(whoo-hoo), but make the sound up or down if the batt is hooked up.

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
hmmmm replaced the 3 relays, headlight switch, cleaned or replaced all grounds, both fuseable links are good and fixed 2 bare wires. Now my headlights dont work up or down, they still make that noise nonstop and I have a power draw still, but not if I swap out an old relay with the drivers side.

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
did you try rebuilding them with new bushings, grease, and gaskets?

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
nope not yet, hoping to not have to.

The white wire from the headlight switch has a draw and when i unhook the isolation relay it goes away.

would needing rebuilt cause a draw?

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
Im not sure if this is related to your problem, but on mine the motor would keep running after they where closed for several seconds, making a clicking noise. The problem was that the plastic bushings in the gear had worn and instead of closing and kicking off, the bushing where not getting a grip and the headlight thought it was still up and would keep trying to roll down. Once I replaced the bushings, problem solved, and they are like new again. The kit is cheap and relatively simple to install, the worst part was just getting the motor and assembly out of the car.

As for it causing a draw on power, Im not sure about that as I never checked that in my car. The noise it was making made it pretty obvious it was something wrong with the gears in it. If your clicking noise sounds like a relay clicking, then its different than my problem. Mine sounded like plastic hitting together, like stirring a milkshake in a plastic cup with a metal spoon.

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
Yah mine sounds more like a relay click and from what I read isn't the gears, no clue what it means though. I'd like to figured it out w/o rigging it, but looks like I'll be putting a toggleswitch to that one wire that draws, so I'll just have to toggle it on for lights up or down and off the rest of the time. I got a bit before it hits the road, so hopefully i can fix it right.

Still thanks for relay referance, wish I thought of saying that at 1st describes what the clicking I was trying to say better. Also the relays are mounted on fenders not by motors and noise comes from motors so that rules them out.

Re: Headlight motors make a clicking sound
He has the older 3-wire motors (1982-86). No bushings to replace. I sell the kit for the older 3-wire motors, but they need to have the style with helical-cut gears. You won't know that until you've opened them up. Some Firebirds had straight-cut gears. There are no repair kits for that style motor. Two-wire motors with bushings inside the traingular-shaped cavity in the gear were used from 87-92. 93-02 two wire motors use yet another kit to repair them. I stock all three repair kits.
