91 firebird to 88 ta taillights
91 firebird to 88 ta taillights
i have read through all the the threads on the taillight conversions but most are using firebird harness. i have the harness for the 88 taillights and want to use that. How do i connect the 88 harness to the 91 harness to make the taillights work correctly. thanks

You have to get both the tail harness and the body-to-tail harness connector out of the donor car for this to work. Just match the wire colors and go, pretty much. But, I have to ask, are you putting base tails into your car or are you going to the newer GTA style tails? Because, if you are, you need more information than that.

If you are staying with separate turn signals, the wire colors will just match up.
However, if you are changing to a system with integrated brake lights and turn signals, you'll need to make an extra modification under the steering column.

Hope this helps.

Re: 91 firebird to 88 ta taillights
i have looked at the thread on the integrated brake light from austinthirdgen but that uses the blue wire in the harness. the harness for an 88 does not have a blue wire. my car harness that im hooking to has the blue wire. am i to add blue wire in with all the lights. im confused since it looks to me as it uses newer harness, not the older style. any ideas

most of the lights seem to work but the side marker lights dont blink so it blinks fast. then when the brake is depressed the blinkers work but the brake lights dont light up on opposite side. i need this car on the road so im not sure what to do.

I don't believe the Firebird side markers flash with turn signals, I believe they are just plain markers that light up with park lamps and tail lights.
Let's get this cleared up to make sure I understand what the problem is:
- tail lights work fine?
- turn signals work fine?
- brake lights don't work at all?
I'd suspect a bad connection of the blue wire to the white wire under the steering column. Or the STOP/HAZ fuse. That would be what I would check first.
Let us know what you find.

the blinkers go fast as though a bulb is burnt out in which they arent. the brake lights work but once the blinkers are on and brake pedal is pushed down the brake lights dont work on opposite side of the blikers that are on. i connected the white wire from the turn signal going into the harness to the blue from the brake switch. it seems to be a good connection. i do believe that the side marker is to blink since the front ones do.

The front side markers do flash with turn signals, yes.
The rear side markers on Firebirds do not flash with turn signals, they are only side markers.
Just to be sure: the brake lights are the same bulbs as the turn signals, correct?
When a blinker is on a the brake pedal depressed, is the third brake light on?
The only thing I can conclude at this point is that the multifunction switch (turn signal switch) in the steering column is malfunctioning.

yes the third brake light is on. before i started this all of my old taillights worked correctly so i sure wouldnt think that the switch should be bad. like i said before its blinking fast as though a bulb is burnt out but the all work just fine also. this is a easy mod thats gone wrong

Re: 91 firebird to 88 ta taillights
You need to access C208 under the dash to finish this (under the dash, way up there by the C100 big firewall connector, has 10-12 wires in 2 separate blocks on one side and a single block on the other). The white wire in pin A disables the brake light on whichever side the turn signal is activated on when the signals are turned on, so the signal can work like it's supposed to.
At least, that's the way it's supposed to work. Rewire everything the way it was and then run pin B from C208 (light blue wire for the brake lights) to the white wire in pin A (turn signal brake light disable). That should cure the problem.
