Smoke coming from speedometer!!!!
Looks like the speedo in my 92 dash burnt out this weekend. I hadnt drove it since August, so I started it up and let the motor run for a few minutes.
I shut it off and started it back. Thats when I saw smoke rolling out of the cracks behind the glass of the cluster.
I quickly shut it off and disconnected the positive battery cable. I then check all the fuses. They were fine. I then pulled the cluster and the wires look fine, but the back of the speedometer smelled burnt.
Would a voltage regulator spike done this, or did the circut board in the speedo just burn out?
I am running a carb and th350 so the computer is gone and the VSS is not hooked up. The wires going to the old 700r4 are tied up out of the way.
Anyone have this happen? Is it ok to put the cluster back in and drive the car? I dont use the speedo after doing the th350 swap so that doesnt matter to me. I just dont want to burn the car down.
help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Smoke coming from speedometer!!!!
i have a 91 that does something similar, but no smoke. the speedo cuts in and out, and during the time its "working" it is about half of the time accurate for speed. i know this because i have a flipout nav unit installed with a digital speedometer. i know that there is lag in GPS speed, but if i hold a speed it shows a 15 - 20 mph - difference (ex. gps says 60, speedo says 40-42)
i dont mean to hijack this thread, but the other day smoke started coming out of the driverside dash. It might be related to what bluegrass is saying. let me know what you learn!
nice car btw.

Well, when I pulled the cluster, I checked the wiring and everything looked ok.
When I looked at the back of the cluster, it looked fine but smelled burnt. Im am almost positive that the circuit board burnt out. I havnt really checked anything else out on the car.

My speed-o jumps all over the place. I was hoping it mat be a speed sensor, but the kilometers used to work when I switched it over. I really dont want to go analog I hope I can get this fixed.
