ok so 84 z, brake lights are not working. we checked the brake switch that goes on the brake pedal. when we bypass the switch with jumper cable, we get brake lights. so the switch must be bad right? we tried 3 different switches, one being brand new. all the switches tested good. we tried all different combinations that you can plug the 2 plugs into the switch but no brake lights. if we can get brake lights by bypassing the switch, then its gotta be the switch. but we tried 3 good switches and nothing. any suggestions?

If you tried 3 good switches and you know they're good (from a working buddy's car, for example), then I would say it's not the switch.
How are you bypassing the switch, do you unplug it first and then insert a paperclip into the empty connector? I would check out the connector, it seems to be the only thing separating the wiring (good) from the switch (good).

Just fyi, it makes a difference which side of the connector you are inserting the jumper through (IF it is a bad connector).
You did a good troubleshooting work, don't stop there!

Im having the same problem, did you jump the brown and grey wires to acheive brake lights on? also do you have 2 brake switches one with a cruz control hose and one with out?
actually kinda embarassing, but it turned out to be a fuse. my brother said he checked them all but guess he didnt check good. now everythings working fine

I had just the same problem but with corrosion to my fuses and at battery area fuse links. My car sat for some years with no love no driver and collected moisture and dirt. So I found it important to clean up everything spray it with some wire cleaner stuff and wire brush it, Remove it clean wires up best I can. My brake lites werent working nor my hazard lites. Now they are fine: Just too much dirt and corrosion. My car is happy now and I have a better chance not getting hit in the rear.

Find out it’s blowing when you press on the brakes, or use the hazards.
Then you can divide & conquer, and trace it out or find the rub thru.

When you see fog lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead. Right grandma?
How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!
