Wiper Fuse Keeps Blowing...

The wipers on my '89 Trans Am haven't worked for a few days now, so I checked the fuse box. I immediately noticed my 15-amp wiper fuse was blown, and replaced it. Almost immediately upon replacing it, it blew again. The key wasn't even in the car, and the wipers were set to off. I tried 2 more fuses after that and the same thing happened every time. Does this mean I have a short somewhere? And how would I go about checking for that?

Re: Wiper Fuse Keeps Blowing...

yup, theres a short somewhere. I've never had a problem with my wiper fuse so I'm not sure how to check. I say unplug the wiper motor from the harness and then try another fuse, if it still blows, it'll be the wiring. If it doesn't, then its something within the [wiper]motor causing it to blow...

Oh alright, thanks. I'll try pulling the motor and checking the fuse after that.

Well I pulled the motor out and the fuse still blows, so it must be in the wiring. I think the first thing I'm going to do is pull the column apart and try replacing the wiper switch. Does anybody know if there's a place I can order one? I can't get an '89 Trans Am switch from Napa or Autozone.

Re: Wiper Fuse Keeps Blowing...

sorry to hear it was the wiring. I'd also suggest getting a wiring diagram for the interior and engine bay so you can see if there is anything else attached to the wiper blade circuit...

This may be way off base, but see if there's a penny in your cigarette lighter. Happened to me years ago - not sure what fuse it was, but it kept blowing just like yours. Maybe the Cig. Lighter and Wipers are on the same fuse?

Long shot, but easy check.
