Inline fuse problem
nvm guys..i did figure out the problem..thanks
Hey all,
Im having a problem with my 91 camaro z28 that ive never seen in my 69 nova. The picture will show the problem i am having with the inline fuse that is supposed to go to the battery then to the altenator. I mounted my battery in the trunk..and when i went to attach wires to that..but longer wires oviously..they overheated to the point of smoking. I used a 6 gauge wire with HEAVY insulation. So i just by passed it by going straight from altenator to battery line..that fixed the the heating problem..but now my radio or car doesnt even start. From what ive read on here..it does have something to do with the ECM..but what explains the heating off the wires to the point of boiling the insulation when i do attach those. Did i do it wrong? i mean yes ive researched alot, weeks to be honest..and if ive overlooked something..alink provided in your experience would be excellent. This car is almost restored..and i just need to finish it..but it starting would be nice haha. Please help, this problem is just confusing to me..considering i came from a 69 nova drag car.
Thanks all,
Adam

Much appreciated

Re: Inline fuse problem
If the wire is getting so hot the insulation is melting off the wire you have a short somewhere. As for the reason the heater works but the car doesn't start or the radio does not work, I'd check the fuses at the panel under the dash to make sure some bare wires didnt touch metal and pop them. if they are good them maybe when you did the bypass something didn't get correctly hooked back up. The other components could hook into the wire you bypass in the dash somewhere. I personally suck at trouble shooting wiring issues without being able to get my hands on the car.

Re: Inline fuse problem
I'd say yes. Some systems are wired through the fuse box with un-related circuts.
For example, my buddy's 87 IROC the alternator stopped charging, it was because of a wire in the cooling fan circut had broken.
