starter problems

hey i have an 89 pontiac fire bird that came with a 305 tbi.. after the car was stolen i rebuilt the motor and instaled a TPI system off a 350. the wiring proccess was a pain but i thought i got it.. when i try to turn the key the starter doesnt do anything.. i cheched the starter and it dose work and i got power to everything in the car... i checked the clutch switch and got power there as well.. also the relay is workin.. at a last ditch effort i tried the solinoid wire and IT HAS POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but the stupid thing still wont turn over..... im confused is it the solinoid on the starter???? if so why does it work when you jump it from the battery!?!?!?!

Re: starter problems

Seems of two things I can think of. Do you have vats for one. and also Did you check if you have power when you turn the key on the ignition switch that could of gotten bad. OR your neutral safety switch maybe? those are the two components to get it running. Now if it was the starter. When you jumped teh starter it started? or did it not work little more info.

Re: starter problems

um im not sure what vats is... but i did check the nutrual switch.. i bypassed it with a wire. the other thing is that i tryed a direct wire to the solinoid from the battery... it did turn the motor overbu i didnt carnk till it started.... gonna take the starter out and take apart the solinoid to see if that is a problem.

Re: starter problems

I just had a starter problem, but I think it's fixed now. I needed a new clutch starter switch and had to clean the terminals. Check your terminals, cause my camaro wouldn't turn on sometimes after I got the new switch. Battery and alternator were fine, but the terminals were black. Cleaned them so they were shinny silver, and now it always turns on.

Re: starter problems

What is the year of the TPI and ECM. Tell these guys and they will tell you if it is a VATS problem.

Re: starter problems

its acualy not a vats problem... the solinoid was caroeded.... cleaned it up and it works fine.. i geuss when i was jumping it the amps were forcing it out.... now i gotta deal with the fuel pump problem lol. there is no power to the pump and the fuse is fine..

p.s the tpi is out of an 89 as well (buddy wrote off this gta)and it does have vats
