Brake light problems

Hey guys, just bought an 86 Trans Am over the weekend, LB9/Auto car, it runs great but the brake lights don't work.

I checked all the bulbs, all the sockets are getting power, bulbs are good. I bypassed the brake light switch and the brake lights worked. This morning I replaced the brake light switch thinking that was it since they worked when I bypassed it, but sure enough, even with the new switch, still nothing.

I really need to get this figured out today so any help would be appreciated. FWIW all the fuses are good as well. I've searched and read about the turn signal switch possibly being a reason. My turn signals work though, however my hazards do not work, so that could be something related. Thanks guys.

Re: Brake light problems

well I'll be honest, if the brake lights work when you jumper the 2 wires going to the brake switch then its probably an issue with the switch. When you put in the brake switch, did you press it in all the way into its hole. I believe there is a plate on the brake pedal itself (shaft) that presses in the button on the brake pedal. When you it the brakes, the plate lets go of the button and the connection is made and the brake lights light up... See if that plate is pressing in the button when the brakes are not applied. There is also another switch next to the brake switch thats the tranny lockup/cruise control. Both of those have to be flush to each other and both of them have buttons that need to be pressed when the brakes are not applied...

Re: Brake light problems

Well, replaced the turn signal switch..still not working. I'm starting to pull my hair out, it's not making any sense.

The brake light switch is all the way in, turn signal switch wasn't too hard to replace.

I don't understand why they worked when I bypassed it, but don't with the new brake swith and turn signal switch. And as far as I understand there's no relay to check for the brake lights. Everything seems to have power and theres no bad fuses...Any ideas? Anybody!?

Take A Brake

Divide and conquer.

Probe the brake switch line a foot or so away from the switch with a voltmeter to absolutely find out if the switch is good and correctly installed.

Happy Racing!

When you see fog lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead.

How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!
