Major Issue
Major Issue
Well I just replace my altenator, because my battery got drained when i put my heat and lights on. Well I tried to jump it last night and there was a major issue and I cant figure it out. I bought a 1 wire capable alt. We connected the jumper up. when I went to connect the last negative onto my dead battery it would spark like 15-20 times, not like just 2-3. Once I got it on securely it would start to glo cherry red like and ember. I checked the cables and posts to make sure it wasnt wrong. I also noticed the 1 wire going from the alt to the positive battery terminal was warmish/hot throughout the wire.
I tried to run it as a 3 wire amp than by removing the rubber gromment and plugging in the clip and 1 negative wire.
Still same results. I checked the ground wires from the battery and all look good. Anyone know the issue?

Re: Major Issue
sounds like something is definatly not hooked up right, you probably need a correct factory styl alt. sounds like a major drain going on with the battery cuz if those cables glow red measn that unless you hooked them up backwards theres a huge drain going on, thats just my opinoin though, i noticed while jumping my bird today and my crown vic last week that the juice it took to get them started warmed up the cable ends up the jumpers a bit, but nothing like what you described, so Id check to make sure you didnt hook negs to pos's first then check on that alt make sure its hooked up correctly.
Re: Major Issue
SORRY FOR CAPS. ITS STUCK LIKE THAT FOR NOW. TODAY I CLEANED OFF THE NEGATIVE ENDS. I THAN TOOK OF THE WIRE FOR THE AMP GOING FROM THE POSITIVE POST FOR MY STEROE SYSTEM. THAN PUT IT ALL BACK ON NICE AND TIGHT EXCEPT FOR THE STEREO AMP WIRE. I THINK IT WAS DOING IT BECAUSE THE POSITIVE POST WASNT IN AS FAR AS IT COULD GO GETTING THE BEST CONNECTION BECAUSE OF THE AMP'S WIRE. BECAUSE IT WORKED NOW. BUT THE ALTENATOR SEEMS A LITTLE FUNNY YET WITH THAT ONE WIRE GOING FROM THE BATTERY TO THE ALT. IT GET PRETTY WARM/HOT. DO I NEED A LOWER GAUGE OF WIRE BECAUSE THE AMP IS 140AMP AND SENDING WAY MORE ELECTRICITY BACK TO THE BATTERY THAN THE OLD ONE?

Re: Major Issue
could be you need a thicker guage wire then if its higher output, is the wire your using original from the ar or did it come with the alt? if its original you could probably need a thicker wire for it, but if it came with the alternator then it should be correct guage for it, so I'd probably just use a bigger wire and see how that works.
