cruise control help
I just got a 1988 305 tpi / 5 speed manual iroc-z about 3 weeks ago. Just been fixing little things getting it back in shape . ok here is my problem so time over the years of the cars life some one has changed in a old steering column out of a firebird . how do i know this because it has a round shape and has a firebird steering wheel . the problim is that the column does not have a cruise control . i was wanting to know what wireing or so on could i do to keep the column i have or do i have to get a new column ? could i take the wireing out of a auto trans camaro column or do i have to brake down and try to find a new/used manual column with cruise? or is the a easer fix ?

Re: cruise control help
In my opinion, it would be much easier to put a camaro column with cruise in the car. It will bolt in and the wiring should not have to be changed. You can use an auto column with some minor work, but a manual would obviously be your best bet. I've got an auto column if your looking. PM me for details. I'll look at what it will take to mod it for the shift lock cable.
Re: cruise control help
Columns were identical for both firebird and camaro throughout the years except for Berlinettas
Cruise or not depended on the turn signal stalk. Upgrading is easy, grab a cruise stalk either from a JY or new from an auto parts store (Help section $40ish). Route the cruise wire through the column and plug it in under the dash
The stalk simply pulls out

Re: cruise control help
yea i was hoping that is what i could get away with doing that. i dont know much about f body cruise just that i have had 4 cars over the years with it and it never works . just a question but is there some main part that make so many not work is it a vacuum line ??? or is it some thing else ??? yea as far as if i had to get a auto column i can get those all day long but the manual ones are geting harder and harder to come but thanks for the offer
Re: cruise control help
Most common failure is the vacuum line on the head unit. It should be on the drivers inner fender near the vacuum canister ball. It will go all the way back to the booster and behind the distributor and T into manifold vacuum with a check valve
Second most common failure is the wire from the stalk wearing through at the base of the stalk where it enters the column
