What is this wire?

My car has had a few wiring problems ive fixed myself. This one im not so sure about. One of the previous owners had the alarm taken out very sloppily and just clipped the wires and left connectors hanging which gave me starting problems before. This wire comes out of yellow wiring or yellow crimp connectors not sure what it is. But under the tape its just bare coil thats twisted together. Was wondering if anyone knew what this thick single black wire was for?

Judging by the gauge of the wire, I'd say that is the yellow wire that runs to the neutral safety switch or the clutch switch for your starter. And yes, I do agree that is a real hack-job.

Do you think that this would affect my cars startup in cold weather at all that the coil doesnt have proper insulation?

Re: What is this wire?

well usually weather does affect the current running through so it could be a possibility

Re: What is this wire?

Cold weather has no effect on that wire other than to lower the resistance in the circuit (read as: more power to the solenoid).

What does your car do (or not do) in cold weather?

Re: What is this wire?

judging by the gauge of the wire it has something to do with the ignition system.
Whether is was a starter kill or some other kind of patch in for the aforesaid alarm.
Check it for voltage with the car on and off.
Reference to where it actually connects to will help.
These older cars could have wires patched in all over the place and we wouldn't know.
The yellow butt connectors really tell us nothing.

it just has a cold startup and doesnt always get going on the first turn takes a few turns for the tachometer to finally settle

Re: What is this wire?

You drive your Bird in NY winters? Shame on you. That's okay, I can't help it either.

Anyways, a good portion of the problem is that the engine is so cold that the fuel actually condenses and drips into the cylinder instead of being a vaporized spray, and that doesn't allow for a proper burn. Compressing the air in the cylinders helps to warm them up a bit, so it takes a while to start the engine. I don't know why mine is doing that right now (didn't used to, but I deleted my cold start injector, so that might be it), but it is. I have been thinking of trying one of those in-line coolant heaters I can just put into my lower radiator hose to help things a bit, because I have NO problems with a warm/hot start.

Same thing goes for the idle air controller... When things are cold, they fit together a little tighter, so it may take a bit of run time to free up the pintle. Either that, or you just need to clean it up a bit.
