UQ7 performance sound question? Experts!
In my GTA I have the UQ7 performance sound and the subs were shot out and torn up when I got the car. So I replaced them with the ones from the fiero store, but when I push the button to turn on the amp the speakers sound distorted and basically worthless. What would be causing this? Could it be a blown amp or are the speakers not compatible with the amp, IE ohms to low? What would a speaker sound like if it's ohms were to low for an amp? I read that the system sounds pretty good from the factory and would like to have this feature back! Thanks!

The OEM Fiero sub looks to be exactly the same sub as the Firebirds used. If it's not the same part number, I'd be shocked. Just that the sound changes, indicates the amp is doing something. Distortion would tell me it's increasing the power output to the subs. Maybe try lowering the gain position or turning the volume down.
Keep in mind most people say the UQ7 sounds good compared to the stock early 80's system. Really the mid 80's factory system sounds REALLY bad. Just swapping from the factory Delco 6x9's in my 87 Iroc to take out Delco 6x9's from my 91 Firebird made a huge difference, even with the stock cassette deck. My 91 Formula has factory Delco speakers all around with a Pioneer head unit and it sounds that much better. My point is that the UQ7 system is dated. They sounded OK in the 80's and early 90's, but compared to modern sound quality, they don't sound too good. The only reason to use any of the original stereos is if you care more about how the components look, and the originality of the car, then you care about sound quality. If you want sound quality, the $99 Pioneer "stereo system in a box" from Walmart will blow the doors off even the top of the line factory Bose system.

I would probably agree with you on it sounding like that because it's an 80's system, but it distorts badly when the gain is all the way down and the bass set at mid line with the radio barely on. If the radio was over half way or the gain was full on and bass turned up high I would agree, but this is not the case. I can't imagine Pontiac producing an obviously distorted sound setup like this and calling it performance.
Does anyone actually have the UQ7 sound system in their car to compare with?
