Starters

Hey guy's,

I am having some problems with my car starting. I just changed the battery as it was bad and at the same time that I was at the parts store I had them do a bench test on the alt and it was fine. Even with the new battery I had to use jumper cables to my truck to start my 88 formula 350. The only other thing I can think of is the starter as I also just replaced both battery cables. What starter do you guys recommend? I am probably going to run over to summit's store next week and I want to pick one up.

Thanks
Jeff

Re: Starters

yeas, the cables are brand new, so is the battery so no corrosion, alt was tested fine and no connection problems there. I know it doesnt make sense but with what I have replaced the only thing left is the starter. I just dont understand why when I jumped it it started, maybe the car needed even more amps to turn the starter.

I thought you already replaced the starter, is it even trying to start at all?

Re: Starters

No I haven't replaced the starter yet, haven’t had the time. I replaced the battery as it had 2 dead cells, the battery cable that had a but end splice covered by an electrical conduit coupling and a whole roll of electrical tape I then had the alternator bench tested which was fine.

After thinking about my starting problems more I have come to the conclusion that the problem is the starter as the car will start up as long as the engine bay is cold, but if I drive the car for a while and try to restart the engine it acts like the battery is dead but after checking the battery it has a full 12.8 VDC. So I think the problem is the starter and therefore I am looking for a good mini starter that I could pick up from Summit as I am going to be up at their home store on Friday and wanted to see what you guys recommend.

Re: Starters

We have a severe-duty mini. Problem before the swap was hard strart all the time! When the old starter was pulled, the solinoid was broke--you could turn it by hand!! We got the big $ starter because a Bigblock will be going in hopefuly by mid summer.
As you know, the mini frees up room from the header // exaust, & is alot lighter weight.
I've experienced the famous " heat soaked " starter on small blocks before-- no fun & always happened at the wrong times!!
My personal fave is our TCI. Never had a problem! It was on our '74 Camaro Bigblock for a few years, & has been on the smallblock for 2 yrs now. It's a 3 hp starter.
Brand name, amps used, compression of the motor are things to think about, as well as what you want to spend.

camarokid4liv--
I learned from the first post I did, that some info is needed--
What motor do you have?
What kind of induction--Computer controlled carb? Throttle body? TPI?
Non computer with a carb?
What kind of carb? Quadra-jet, Holley, Edelbrock?

Some of the wire connectors may need a lil tightening, check all grounds.
My dads '91 Blazer temp gauge went to the extreme hi side when trying to start, even after sitting all night. We replaced the temp sensor & all was good.
3rd gens wiring is beyond me-- ppl who can help need all the info you can give!!
