Electronic OEM Speedo with TH350

Hi there !

I have a ī90 5.0 TPI (or should it be MFI ?) Trans Am that had originally the manual T-5 transmission. Somebody swapped in a TH350 but did not connect the speedometer. I know this issue with the conversion of the mechanical drive to an electronic speedo has been discussed before but I could not find a simple ( and not at least cheap) solution.

The only one I found so far is this for about $80:

I think Iīd also require an extension because of the tranny mount in front of the output.

According to these guys I should have an electronic speedo that requires 4k pulses per mile.

Can somebody confirm if this will work or already has done this ?

The Daytona Digital pulse generator would be nice for 30 bucks but sends 8k pulses per mile.

I got a 2 lead connector hanging on the drivers side of the tranny, I suppose this was from the original vss. The reverse lights arenīt working as well, how are these controlled ? Has the TH350 an output for the reverse or do I need to install a switch at the shifter ?

Regards from Germany !

Marc

Re: Electronic OEM Speedo with TH350

The JTR unit is the most commonly used. Some other brands can be found at a lower cost, but its hard to figure out which uses what signal 2k, 4k, 8k 16k etc

Your 90 TPI will want 4,000 pulse per mile signal. Splice the two wires from the new sensor directly to the old VSS wires. If the speedo doesnt work, then switch the wires

Auto cars have a backup switch at the shifter, manual cars have it at the trans. Run the two wires for backup near the shifter and splice into the middle pair of wires from the shifter connector. They should be light green and either blue or brown (cant remember colors for 90)

I ordered the pulse generator from JTR, unfortunately they donīt carry the extensions anymore. I donīt seem to able to find these anywhere.

Does somebody know a source ? I think it will be impossible to get the 7/8-18 here in Germany.....
