Re: torque converter question

There are no wires to the TC - the lock-up occurs in the transmission - electronically the pump in the tranny pumps extra fluid forward into the TC - when full the fins inside the TC can't turn, thus there is no difference in the speed of the outer part of the TC spinning versus the inner part. Make sense? TC is like 3 pieces, an outer, an inner, and a set of fins (like a turbine in a jet engine). Outer part connected to tranny, inner part to engine (I think - you get the idea). Less fluid means the fins can spin at a different rate than the motor, and thus the tranny side is spinning at what ever rate the fins spin at. More fluid means system kinda gets clogged, and the fins spin at the same speed as the motor, and thus the tranny spins at same speed as fins. Kinda Sorta like that.

But - if the TC was locked (ie full of fluid), I would think the car would die as soon as it's put into gear. I know if I have my TC locked at 55mph, and I slow to 20mph, it starts chugging and trying to die around the 30mph mark (ie tranny - or wheels - are wanting to spin slower than the engine rpm needed to run).

Is the car slipping, or is it just not staying running after you put into gear?

If slipping - Have you checked the fluid levels? It takes alot (like almost 12 qts.) of fluid to refill a totally empty tranny and TC.

Re: torque converter question

I don't know about all that - it was just a thought. Like everyone, sometimes I have good ones, sometimes I have bad ones, and sometimes I draw a complete blank. May help you, may not - but that's what these boards are for - to bounce thoughts. Hope it works out for you!
