I have an 86 camaro 305 FI. My alternator is overcharging my battery. On the dashboard the alternator is reading 18 volts and is close to the red. I have tried disconnecting the battery and connecting it back up. I talked to a mechanic and he told me that i had an open circuit and i was to check my fuse box and dash to see if a fuse was not in correctly. I haven't check the fuses yet. do anybody have an answer to the problem.

The regulator is probably bad. I think it's inside of the alternator on an '86. You can either replace the alternator or take it apart to replace the regulator inside of it. Like mentioned, some auto parts stores will test the alternator for you outside of the car as well. The main thing is not to run it too much like that or it can fry the battery.

I tested the alternator today is it passed

Did the gauge // dash lights get real bright?

Is there a way to test the gauge & alternator while the car is running?
Could be a bad gauge..??..

I never trust the stock gauges. I made one of these and I've ended up using it quite a bit for different things. Just plug it into the cig lighter and check the voltage under different driving conditions.

you were right the alternator was bad i just replaced it.
