Did BigBadLou's Trans Am tail light swap - now blinkers are too fast
Hi guys. I posted this in the body forum and didn't get any responses. Hoping to have better luck here. This was done on a 1987 Formula. I followed BigBadLou's writeup on how to rewire. I connected light blue wire under dash to white wire and did all the tail light wiring just as described in his how-to. But now the blinkers cycle in a very strange way. They are much too fast and light is pretty weak. When I turn the hazards on they cycle the way they are supposed to. Any idea on what it can be? Everything cycled just fine before the swap.

Try replacing the flasher... There is an additional bulb in the circuit, which increases the current through the flasher. Try swapping the flasher for the hazards and the turn signal flasher to see if the flashing slows. If swapping the flashers works, you'll need to buy an identical flasher for the other circuit. I believe both of mine, after swapping to the 82-84 tails, are the 552 flasher. Yes, my tails have 4 lights and 2 of them are blinkers, just like the later models.

Are you talking about changing the bulbs to 552 bulbs? The hazards work fine using the same bulbs but the blinker doesn't.

get a heavy duty flasher that has a flash interval independent of load

Are all the bulbs dim? Or just the last light barely lights before the sequence restarts?

The running lights are good. Brake lights are good. Emergency blinkers are good. But as soon as the turn signal comes on the bulbs are very dim, but only the 2 bulbs that are blinking. They come on real quick and then go out. I'll give the flasher idea a try to see if that solves it. For what it's worth the little peanut bulbs are lit the way they are supposed to as well.

The stock flashers aren't the slowest things out there. Look at my avatar. That is my Hazards running on the STS unit. Are your faster? flower? dimmer?
Anyway you can get a video of them to show it? That would help a lot.

Emergency blinkers run on a different flasher. The peanut bulbs aren't part of the turn or flasher, unless you rewired them to be.

It's hard to describe how they cycle, but if you take your avatar as an example (mine are not sequential btw), my blinkers turn on and off at about the same rate as your lights go off, just a quick on and off (if you can imagine that). I'll try to get a video of them. And yes I did wire the peanuts in as running lights, but the blinker problem was there before I did that and as you mentioned they are not part of that circuit anyway.
look at the outside bulb when my dad hits the turn signals...stock flasher did not allow enough time for the second bulb to fully light before restarting the cycle.

I bought an adjustable flasher so i can adjust the speed of my sequentials how i want them. flasher was kinda pricy...40 bucks.

how they were after the flasher and before led's.

My lights flash like the same speed as yours and the light is as weak as the second light (in your first video). I've got a flasher ordered. Should be here tomorrow. I'll see if that takes care of it.

Got the issue solved. Hopefully this will help someone else along the way. I replaced the flasher with a 552 flasher from O'Reilly's ( Part Number: FC552). Everything works like a charm. Thanks Maverick for pointing me in the right direction and to the rest of you who chimed in.
