need help with turn signal and gauge lights

alright i got an 86 firebird 2.8 v6 automatic transmission and idiot light dash. well basically the electrical system on this car is a nightmare i have chased numerous gremlins. and fixed many bad electrical connections. but these issues have me stumped.

the first issues cause is pretty obvious it is the gauge face lights and console lights don't come on. the front of the stereo lights up and will dim and get brighter with the switch. but i cant get any thing out of the others. this problem started when i was fixing a short in the console light wire. i turned the lights on so i could test it and accidentally grounded it out. i replaced the fuse and it still don't work. some one told me i fried the dimmer switch is that possible and if so where can i find a new one.

the second issue is the clock on the front of the stereo stays on all the time and slowly will drain my battery.

the last problem just started. its my left turn signal wont work. the front blinker wont come on and the back one stays lit if i turn on the left turn signal. but if i turn on the 4 ways they all blink. also the lit on the dash for the left turn signal doesn't *** on with either the turn signal or four ways.

any help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Due to the fact the radio dims OK it sounds as if the dimmer circuit is good but you might have popped a wire, or it might have been a poorly made splice by the PO.

Probe the
INST LPS fuse while you rotate the rheostat back and forth.

What are your findings?

RE: Clock not turning off.

On many radios there are two 12 volt lines going to it.

One keeps the memory alive, the other illuminates the display when the key is turned to RUN.

You can probe the wires in back of the radio to confirm.

If you still can’t fix it you can provide the make and model number.

Turn Signals:

Probe the
light blue wire coming out of the steering column while the key is in RUN, and the stalk is in the LEFT position.

What are your findings?

what do you mean by probe?
and whats a rheostat?

and this car is full of poorly made splices.

should i pull the stereo to check the wires behind it?

could the turn signal be a blown bulb in the dash?
if so how do i get it out?

probe with volt meter...record measurements.
There are ways to check continuity in wiring to your dash lights.
Rheostat I think is your dimmer dial. Voltage should vary with dial rotation.
I would think the bulb in the dash would be wired independently...I'd have to look at the wiring real quick. Does it light when the hazards are on?

There's good info from Nina in a similar thread earlier. About testing wires.

so i got to find a voltmeter i can borrow. how much do they cost?

and about the turn signals when i use hazards the out side lights blink the inside left one does nothing which is why i was thinking it could be the problem there?

how do i get the stereo out to test its wires?

thanx and sorry but i am an idiot when it **** to electronics.

You can get one for only $5 at many electronics stores.

Yes, once you probe the light blue wire coming out of the steering column while the key is in RUN, and the stalk is in the LEFT position, you will obtain more info.

If the car has its’ original radio then typically you need to remove a few screws on the trim piece covering the radio, then remove the four screws holding the radio in.

Re: need help with turn signal and gauge lights

this car is playing mind games. the lights around the speedometer randomly started working yesterday. but not in the center console or around the fuel gauge. today took the gauge cluster apart to try and get the turn signal working. all the bulbs in the cluster are good and after i switched them around into different holes they now all work. and the left turn signal lights inside and outside all come on now but still don't flash. they do flash with the four ways. so i was thinking it was the flasher thing? but then i flipped the gauge lights on and with the left turn signal off the inside light comes on with the gauge lights. and if i turn on the left turn signal the inside light shuts off and outside lights turn on still no flash. and as soon as i turn of the gauge lights the signal light inside comes back on. hope fully that makes sense. do any of you have a clue what could cause this? could it be the flasher thing. if so where is it and how do i replace it? thanx
