question about VATS and LoJack
Hey guys, well I started feeling kinda paranoid about my baby (91 TA vert) since it's become my DD until the winter and I was wondering if VATS still does a decent job of preventing theft. It's an old system I know and thieves probably know the trick with the resistors but the 4 minute lockout in between tries looks good. I heard that back in the day, thirdgens were at/near the top of the list of most stolen vehicles but when VATS was introduced, they pretty much fell off the list. Again I understand that this was at least 20 years ago.
And does anybody have LoJack in their cars? Did it ever recover a vehicle for anyone? I'm thinking about getting it for my TA.
Thanks!

Re: question about VATS and LoJack
The only thing I can be sure of is that if a thief wants to steal a car, he will find a way... remember that a lot of them just tow or flatbed the car away and then deal with them later.
I suppose it would be quite effective against joyriders, though.

LoJack is an excellent idea.
Towers can be defeated.
When parking, back it in so they have to drag locked wheels.
Install a tilt switch so if the car is lifted, a siren plus smoke release canisters are set off.
You can use hidden batteries so even if the moron cuts the battery cable the other batterie(s) will take over.
You can have it turn on a GPS tracker so you can stop the thief PERMANENTLY
For non-towing situations (the vast majority) you can install:
A fogger.
Sheet metal in the door making it impossible to use a slim-jim.
A glass break alarm/ignition disabler.
A keypad lockout of the ignition.
Hidden switches.
Switches which have to be touched in a certain order so even if they’re not hidden the loser won’t know the correct order.
A timer that makes the loser think he is getting away by allowing the car to start but it stalls after several seconds and only you know the secret to defeat it.
The above is small portion of the many ways to render thieves helpless.
No one from the Impossible Missions Force is going to try to steal anyone’s car.
It’s all about keeping the street trash in line, and occasionally horizontal.

Holy crap are you 007 by any chance? The backing-in is a great idea... I knew I made a habit of that for a reason! The reason I usually back into spots is so pulling out is safer, easier, and quicker... it didn't occur to me that it could help stop a tower. You got some good stuff Nina!

Re: Taking Out The Trash
Hey, NINA -- I've always wanted to do this -- how about a fogger that uses poison gas and locks all the doors electrically?? Then the radio plays "The Star Spangled Banner"... well, you get the idea.
This actually reminds me of a movie where a guy did that -- it was called "52 Pick-Up", starring Roy Scheider and Ann Margret. The guy gets blackmailed, and he ends up having to give the bad guys a suitcase full of cash and his Jaguar as ransom for his wife.
It ends badly for the villain, who turns on the cassette player, and hears Scheider's voice telling him he has 3 seconds to live... then the car locks itself and blows to bits. I LOVED it.

Re: Taking Out The Trash

And NINA, the tilt switch looks interesting, but what if you park on a steep hill? And does anybody know if LoJack has its own separate battery?

LoJack uses the car battery unless the thief cuts the cable.
Then LoJack's backup battery provides power.

Tilt Switch
You can use an IR tilt switch whereby it doesn’t matter what position you leave the car.
The IR switch looks for a change in the position of the car.
