We have this '91 firebird GTA that all of a sudden developed this random stalling problem.

This ONLY happens when the car has the misfortune of operating below around 1600 RPMs a minute or so after the first start of the day. I can drive down town in second gear all day long, but once i have to let the car operate below 1600 or so revs, the engine just turns off! The reason why i believe it's some ignition problem is because the guages also shut off! Also, if it makes any difference, the Infl. Rest. light flashes as soon as it turns off!

After the car stalls it won't start back up untill a minute or so. The longest it has taken us to start it without immediate stalling was around 7 minutes.

Please help! If you need any more info just ask!

 

Ok question for you. What about lights and stuff does all your other electrical stuff work? When the car dies if you tried to restart it what happens? nothing, cranks but no start ect? Also does this happen consistently like always dies if its idleing under 1600 RPMs like a min after being started or only some times? By the way welcome to the site.

 

Symptoms sounds like a dying IGN module. Heatsoak makes the problem worse and does affect restarts

SIR light flashing on a stall is normal

Tach, oil and voltmeter will go dead on a stall. Coolant, fuel, speedo will still work as long as the IGN is on

 

Yeah ALL the guages turn off including the speedo. Also, the radio seems to still work after it stalls, i havent tried other things yet. After the car stalls, it will crank for a while but with no fire; I am certain that during this there is no spark. Then after you wait a little while it will turn over and start right up, but alot of times it will immediately shut off again before you can do anything.

But yeah pretty much the car will stall very often often when the rpms are low enough. Sometimes you can get it to idle for a little little bit, but then it shuts off...

 

Sounds like the module. Good thing it's cheap

 

we bought one and we are going to put it in today!

As for the guage situation, my brother, the one who experienced these problems, gave me wrong information; i thought the computer was shutting off when this happened but it turns out it's a simple loss of power. So now the ignition module sounds like the culprit!
