Hi, I just put on a new powermaster alternator. It is the 140 amp in the cs130 case. Before I installed it I tried to spin the alternator. It was very stiff and didn't spin unless I really twisted hard. The car with the stock l98 has some trouble starting and the alternator makes a "whirring" sound. Is that normal for break in or should I return it? It pulls 13v on my guage at idle which is betetr than the old one, but the noise and rough start up have me concerned.

sounds like you may have a bad bearing in the alt. give it a little more time to see if things change (doubtful though), but if its still making noise, don't miss out on your warranty and get it replaced

 

Got the same alt, easy to spin, no noises. Something's not right. I have other powermaster alternators (the small denso styles) and they require you to pull the shaft out a little right out of the box, at least that's what they told me when mine was rubbing and making noises. Can't imagine a CS130 as having that same issue. Yours is probably bad but it never hurts to check.

 

Mines was always quiet. Been on the car for a little over 5 years.
