Washer fluid motor
I have a 87 RS that had a non tilt column in it. My old column was equiped with delay wipers and cruise. I got a used tilt column and installed it , it is also equiped with delay wipers and cruise. My winshield washer pump is mounted to the wiper motor assembly. Is it normal for the washer fluid pump to work only when the wipers are on? I thought that you could turn on the washer fluid and that would also turn on the wipers to clear the fluid from the windshield and then after a few strokes the wipers would shut off.

The wipers can be OFF and you just have to rotate the thumb wing a little and the washer and wipers will come on for a few seconds.
Also, the wipers can be ON and you can still request washer fluid with the thumb wing.

OK I guess I have a problem, my washer fluid pump will only work when the wipers are on. This works with the thumb wing as you call it. If I try to use the washer fluid with the wipers off it does not work. Do you think this would be a problem with the switch in the column or in the wiper motor assembly itself? Thanks for the help!!

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the gray wire coming out of the steering column from the washer/wiper controls.
Or you can probe the gray wire at the under-hood assembly.
When you press the thumb wing are you getting 12 volts?
