83 Firebird S/E. The Bird started last week. Now it doesn't. Little bit of a read.

Little "history".

I bought an 83 Firebird S/E about a week ago. The guy I bought it from said in order for the battery to not die I would have to disconnect the positive cable because (he thought) the stereo was somehow staying on and killing the battery. He also said in order to start it up I would have to hold the brake down and push the shifter forward that way it was in park. Basically the shifter is shot and can move back & forth without pressing a button. So I went to start it and it didn't start. The battery volts were a bit below 13v. So I charged the battery over night. Came back the next day and I believe it started right up. I let it run for a few, turned it off and let it sit while I looked at some stuff. Went to start it up again to test drive and it didn't start. I was probably 10mins since I turned it off.

I then noticed this blinking red light under the dash that had a button underneath it (I don't think it was blinking the first day I was there because I would have noticed it). I pressed it a couple of times and the light stopped blinking. Still the car didn't start. I figured let me try jumping it with my car. Well guess what, it started right up. I drove it around for about 15mins. Told the guy I wanted it and drove it around the block to my house.

So I decided, let me try Seafoaming this thing and do an oil change. Well once again....the car is NOT starting. I've charged the battery AND put the battery from my car in it and still nothing. I've even put the battery charger on it @ 50v and nothing. The battery gauge is well above 13v. I tried playing around with the button and had the light turn off, nothing.

My dad noticed there's a toggle switch by the fuse box. 2 positions - ON OFF. So I started playing with that (mind you I never knew about this switch when I went to look at the car myself and the car started). Still nothing. I turned on the headlights and tried starting it and noticed the headlights didn't dim so it seems like its not drawing power nor is the battery gauge going down any when trying to start it.

I found the wires to the horn were cut. I twisted the wires together and now the horn works. I noticed these horn wires and a 3rd wire (comes from a hood sensor) all come together and go to this little black box under the dash that has a red light on it. The red light wasn't on but if you hit it the red light would go on. I'm going to look at that tomorrow during the day and see if there is a bad solder joint.

I'm guessing my problem is with this alarm system and this black box I found. So how would I go about disconnecting it or does someone have any other idea. If someone asks no I don't have an alarm button to turn it on/off.

All help is very appreciated as I want to get the ball moving on this thing and sell it off.

Alarm Disarm

It does sound like the alarm system is preventing start.

Some of the wires going to the alarm will be unique in color and gage.

Most likely you can cut and tape those.

Other wires will be pairs of colors and gage, you can splice those.
(You can temporarily put a fuse inline if you’re unsure.)

Re: Alarm Disarm

There are 3 wires

2 Wires that go to the Horn
Black
Red

1 Wire that goes to the hood sensor
Black

All 3 wires go to that little black box I spoke of in my original post. I still have to resolder the wires in that box which I hope will make it's red light stay on. Then again I don't know if that light is suppose to stay on.

If I were to cut the wires from the black box with the battery removed, re-installed the battery would the car start? I've never dealt with alarms before.

In many alarm systems the red light means the system is armed.

Some have a steady light, some blink, some flash codes on more sophisticated systems.

Because there are only 3 wires on the unit as you stated, it is not capable of preventing the car to start based on the connections you described.

With 3 only wires, it is a very unsophisticated unit.

Because you don’t have a remote for the alarm you should remove it.

If you want an alarm you should get a new one.

Re: Alarm Disarm

Okay so it def was more complex than 3 wires lol. The alarm system is by Code Alarm. I bypassed it and now the bird is chirpin.

Thanks for the help
