dual fan relay gets hot and burns pig tail

hey guys have a question about my fan relay. i have a 91 z28 convertible. i installed a 96 lt1. the problem im having is that the dual fans and i have them on all the time. the fans have been hard wired like that since i installed the lt1 only becuase the temp gets to hot and the car runs like crap. til resently one of the relays got super hot and burned the pig tail. i noticed it two days ago when i was on the highway my temp started going up when i got home one of the fans was off and the relay was shot. has this happened to anyone and what you did to fix it any help at all will be thankful. also i believe its the secondary fan

They're not designed for continuous use. Your LT1 PCM has wires to control both fans independently and info how and where to do so is posted in the LTx/LSx forum

Re: dual fan relay gets hot and burns pig tail

hey guy thanks for the input. ok i check the hook up on the secondary relay which has a gray wire connected to the ac plug on the passenger side but i don't have the ac in the car. that gray wire i had hooked up to a ground so when i turned the key the fan was running. i unhooked the wire from the ground and ran the car till it warmed up. the car temp went passed 240 and fan did not come on. need info on where to hoook this gary wire to.

Why? Wasn’t the CTS operating correctly?

If it isn’t, fix it.

Then power one relay off of the ECM as in the stock configuration, and another relay off of the power contacts of the first relay.

Don’t use any of the connectors or relays which overheated.

Have one relay operate one fan each.

All these parts are capable of operating 24-7.

Happy Racing!
