Engine doesn't start

Hi everyone and thanks for your support!
Here is my new issue on my 88 iroc 350 TPI:
when i turn the key i only hear a click coming from the hood and so, in the last month, more and more often my car doesn’t start at the first attempt; then i have to do combination (everytime different) of turn on and off the key, move from P to N and viceversa, push the brake and finally the car starts.

Any suggestion?

Thanks
Manuel

Re: Engine doesn't start

Follow this diagnostic - just skip the VATS stuff and the starter enable relay (which is only on VATS cars)...

Re: Engine doesn't start

here is what i've found:
i have to press 4 or 5 times the brake pedal till it becomes very hard and then, when i turn the key, the engine crank.
this explains why it cranks at the first try after the car has been parked for a long time (weeks.. and the brake pedal goes hard by itself).

In the ignition diagnostic i don't see anything about the brake system, what can it be?

thanks

Re: Engine doesn't start

Odd, nothing would electrically connect the brakes with the ECM...other than brake switch to disengage the lock up converter right?

Re: Engine doesn't start

Your imagination.

Not trying to be a jerk - just saying as stated, there's nothing connecting the brakes with the ignition system. And I've never heard of brakes stiffening up while sitting.

For months I thought my starting issue was heat related, my starter actually touched my header flange, but it was electrical under the dash, and not heat - even though the starter actually touched the header, there wasn't enough heat soak to mess up the starter, it tests fine even after 4 years of being subjected to header heat.

To set your mind at ease, disconnect the connector at the brake pedal switch and see if you still have the same starting issue.

If your issues revolve around moving the shifter, chances are good you need to adjust or replace the neutral safety switch.
