speedo loss and SES light

1992 Trans am 5.0 TPI
sometimes while driving my speedometer will slam right down to zero and the SES light will flash and the car seems to run rough
but it will come back to normal after a split second
sometimes it cycles like that a few times
anyone ever have this problem?
thanks

Excellent Brakes 140 to 0 in Zero Seconds !

You might have an intermittent VSS signal.

You can monitor the VSS signal with an audio amplifier.

Connect the amp’s input to the
gray wire pin 8 going to the dash at the dash connector on the right as you would a CD player.

Ground to ground, the signal wire to the inner wire of the audio amplifier wire.

The next time the speedometer fails if the signal stopped also, you will know that‘s the problem.

Happy Racing!

Ran into this a while back, would not register and the trans wouldn't shift. Thought I was in big trouble $$$. But it turned out the speed sensor was sludged up and not getting signal pulses. This is a plug in deal in the transmission tailshaft. Just take it out and clean it up. Maybe not your problem - but let's hope so.

Ive already replaced the VSS to see if that was the problem going to see if it does it again
but i figured a bad VSS wouldnt throw a code and make the car run rough
ive also replaced the ECM and TPS

Something else to check. Behind the engine there are several grounding connections. Real hard to get to. These do get corroded, charred, and will loosen up and cause all sorts of problems like this. Check Them. I took all these connections and rerouted them to the top of the engine on the intake so I could keep an eye on them.
