alternator plug

i have a 1990 tpi harness & alternator, there are two wires that come out of the plug connector to the alternator, a thick res and a small brown, the red wire that comes out of the plug has a end on it, that is the size of the pos+ post for the battery cable from the battery to the starter and has a plenty of wire to run to the starter, dose it plugs into the alternator at the nut, or dose the red go to the starter, or to the battery? i thing i know the brown is gauge,

Alternative Wiring

The thinner red wire goes form the alt to a fusible link near the starter.

Re: alternator plug

I have a 1991 Z28 that I cant find a positive battery cable like the original. The original cable has the large cable going to the starter and a smaller one going to the alternator with an in line fuse and two wires coming of it going to a weatherpack. Cant find one can some one tell me what I need to solve this problem.

Re: alternator plug

can any one tell me if the red wire coming out of the alternator plug, that plugs into the alternator, that has a red and brown wire coming out of it on a 90 5.7 z, does it go to the starter, or the battery, or the alternator

Re: alternator plug

THE WIRES ON THE ALTERNATOR SHOULD BE AS FOLLOWS: P L I(F) S This should be on the regulator of the alternator. It is cast into the plastic body of the reg. The Red wire should be the S terminal which is a sence wire( battery voltage) It can be put on the alternator battery terminal on the back of the alternator. It can also go to either the starter battery terminal or the battery itself. The closer the wire is placed to the battery the better the input to the alternators regulator. This is used to tell the reg what the cars demand for power is. The other wires are as follows: I is ignition or key feed. Some years this is a F terminal which shows duty cycle (how hard the alternator is working)
L is the dash light. This is where the other small brown wire should be going. This turns the reg on and then becomes an output to turn off the dash light. The P is a phase terminal that produces ac (half batt voltage) that is used to drive tachs.
