82 Steering Column Wiper Switch pin-out

Hi,

I have a problem on my 82 z28 pace car model and hope that you can help me.

I have 82 z28 pace car 305 with 4bb someone broken in to it and broke the steering column ignition. So I end up replacing the entire steering column that come out of 87 iroc z28. There are 3 sets of wiring budles in the steering column. the first bundle is for the turn signal switch, 2nd is for wiper switch and the 3rd wire is for the cruise control switch.
Now the wiper switch color coded pin out from the 87 steering column is different from the 82 steering column.
Do you know how would I arrange the pin out from the 87 so it will work on my 82 z28? right now my wiper control and the cruise control on my steering columns doesn't work.

Does my question make sense? If not, let me know.

You quick response is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

82 z28

Re: 82 Steering Column Wiper Switch pin-out

You can, if you swap wiper motors, but the firewall is different for the earlier models, the wiper motor sits a lot deeper in those and the bolt positions for the motor are different. You'd either have to weld in a piece from a later car (right jeff? LOL) or modify a later wiper motor to bolt to the firewall and elongate the Z shaped drive linkage (that's what I did on another car), you will also have to severely ball hammer the snot out of the lower area in the firewall because of how the later motor has the electro motor attached (big alu extension) and it's in the way. I trimmed the motor and reworked the firewall

The reason I did this was that the bulky stock motor doesn't fit with the corvette style super ram, the later motor has a plastic cover w/ a push in electric wiper fluid pump, it's easily cut off and rewired for an external one. This gives me the room i need there...it's a big PITA though

I gave up trying to make the 82 wiper motor run of the 90 harness ... I think the 82 switch, switches positive power and the 84-up grounds the wiper motor. Only way to make it work right is pull guts out of the 82 column and put them in the 87 column.

Marck 90 motor which that 82 has even harder to deal with then earlier 84-88 wiper motor.

Re: 82 Steering Column Wiper Switch pin-out

I recently re-built an 83 Z28. At first I intended on using an 86 engine bay harness and planned to swap motors to the later style. I decided against that due to the firewall mounting issues. Then I was still going to use the 86 harness and re-wire...... Decided against that once I saw how different the wiring system was. ( seemed like the wiper switch gets power on the 82-83 and the motor gets power in the 84+, or something like that ! )

I ended up buying an 82-83 engine bay harness and never looked back !

Your "simplest" option is to buy and install the proper Steering Column.....(And I happen to have 1 from an 83 Z with manual tranny.)
