Firebird tachometer not working…
Hello everyone,
I have a 1991Pontiac Trans Am with a non-operating tach. It does not move at all. No warning, one day just did not work at all when I started the car.
I know a lot has been said on here about calibrating a Camaro tachometer by means of a resistor (“https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/el...meter-fix.html (90-92 Tachometer fix....)”), but I am fuzzy as to first - whether or not the fix is the same for a Firebird and second - whether or not a non-operating tachometer could be caused by the same resistor issue as a faulting reading tachometer. All other gauges work. So prior to just replacing the tachometer circuit board, other suggestions are welcomed.
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jim

Tach Is No Good For Speed Over A Mach
Make sure the signal is still getting to it from the distributor.
It would be nice if it’s just a loose or dirty connector.
Before you replace the board you can make sure the D’Arsonval movement is still good.

How bout those too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime
and the ones that need headlights for a little rain

Re: Firebird tachometer not working…
I have checked the coil and distributer connections and they appear fine (so long as no wires are broken). What is the "D’Arsonval"?
Thanks,
Jim

The mechanism which moves tach needles either are D’Arsonval or stepped motors.
In either case you can test the movement before swapping the board hoping it will fix it.
After isolating the unit from the driver board gradually apply voltage to it to see if you get any movement.
