high beams don't work?

i recently bought a 92 RS, in pretty good condition, with mostly new parts, and the guy told me he had recently changed the headlights and high beams, however today when i tried to turn on the high beams, they wouldn't work. the steering column is fairly loose, a problem i've dealt with before in my third gens, could this be why? maybe the wiring is also loose within the column itself so the switch isn't working right. does anyone know how to troubleshoot this, find the root of the problem and fix it? i'm not savvy with electronics....not at ALL. thanks.

Re: high beams don't work?

The actual switch that changes between high and low beams is a ways down the column and actuated by a rod that a lever connected to the turn signal arm pushes. The switch has adjusting screws and becomes loose over time and starts doing what you describe. It's pretty easy to fix if that's the only and usual problem. Take off the panels under the steering wheel and get down there and check it out. You should be able to see the rod move when you pull back on the lever. Reach up and push in and out on the front of the switch, and if it clicks ok you can check to see if it is switching the lights properly. It will take a small 1/4" ratchet with a 7 or 8mm socket or a little wrench that size to loosen(just a little) the two bolts and take up the slack. It may be easier for you to drop the column to make it easier to access. No need to remove the steering wheel and if you have a tilt wheel, make sure it's in the position you drive in when adjusting the switch. Tighten up(snug, but don't overdo it) test and if it worksjust button back up. Have fun

Re: high beams don't work?

I found on mine I can't get high beam with the steering wheel angled down. I need to put it back up which is awkward for driving but good for seeing. I didn't know abou the linkage adjustment. I'll give it a go.

Yeah, often times moving the steering wheel up or down will take out some of the slack and make it work. Adjusting as described will fix that. Just make sure you tighten it down with the wheel set to where it is usually when you drive.
