temp gauge

temp gauge
ok here is my problem.i turn the key to start the car and the temp gauge goes all the way up. then the damn thing sticks there when the car is running.i have to hit it like the fonz to get the thing back down.so here are my questions. 1 is this normal to go up like this durning starting. no other gauges do this. and is this gauge seperate in the gauge cluster,so i can replace just that gauge? thanks for the help!!!!!

The gauge is not "separate". However, you can check the a couple of things. Disconnect the gauge wire from the sending unit on the engine and turn the ignition on. The gauge should go to the max position. Plug the wire back in and the gauge should now start to move down. If This doesn't happen, you have a wiring issue. If it functions correctly during this process, you may have to pull the gaugle cluster and make sure the connections are solid. Worst case, you can replace the motor/actuator behind the gauge face but you run the risk of breaking needles and possibly other things.
