Best Battery for 5.7 89 Bird
I'm in need of a new battery for my Formula. Thought I'd give a shout out to see what everyone else likes or dislikes!
Thanks everyone!

I personally like the optima batteries. I have a redtop in my iroc it does great. Been in there for a couple years now. I also have a redtop in my taurus sho which has been in there for 6 years now and never had a problem with it. Still cranking nice and strong. Another good thing about the optima batteries is they are a dry cell battery and dont have to worry about the green death developing on the terminals from acid leaking.

I had an Optima in my boat, worked great. O'reilly's has one for $152. I have a Interstate in my truck. I've looked at all of them til my head is spinning. Our 01 Tahoe still has the orignal battery in it! Thanks for your input!

Unless you are spending the big money on an Optima, the rest are all the same basically. "Gold" vs. "Silver" means longer life is all usually, and maybe a few more CCA's. Unless it's an Interstate they are all made in China (and not even all Interstate's are made in USA).
There are, in reality, only about a dozen battery manufacturers in the world that supply every kind of battery known to mankind, and 80% of all batteries are made in China, regardless of what the label reads. Duracell different than anything else? Nope - just a different label - granted they are rated higher amps, and thus last longer, but still made at the same Chinese plant that a Dollar Tree battery is made, with the same guts.
{My wife is the Battery Queen as I call her - she works for a battery reseller that sells almost every battery made from every manufacturer worldwide, and over the years has learned just about everything there is to know about a battery}
Take the best bang for the buck you find unless you want an Optima.
Why the expense for the Optima? 'Cause they are worth it if you have the buck to spend. I had a redtop on a car that the alt belt broke on - that battery ran the car with no alternator (juiced the plugs, radio, wipers, lights) for a 100 mile trip back home in middle of the night, and started right up the next day and ran another trip to the auto parts store for a belt - can't beat them, but you do pay for them!

Thanks c.newbie! I bit the bullet and got an Optima about a half hour ago.
My birthday present to me! Ha! Major difference when cranking now and has dual posts for my trickle charger when storing! Problem solved! Thanks also to the " Battery Queen" too!

Re: Best Battery for 5.7 89 Bird
Nice choice, wish I could justify the expense myself. But since my camaro's restore, it doesn't usually travel far, never late at night, and 99% of the time within a couple miles of a parts store, so no real need for me.
My beater 1987 Bronco II on the otherhand may find itself on any given day 50 miles from nowhere in a raging blizzard LOL. I've had that poor thing 6 years now, still has battery from PO in it, cranks and runs great everyday. When that battery finally dies, I'll stick an Optima in it - but it won't know what to do with it. Poor truck hasn't has new tires in over 10 years (me and the PO always put used on it since it's a beater). And no one ever washes it because the dirt is what's holding it together. But having only spent $400 on it 6 years ago, and never doing anything but changing oil in it, I certainly can't complain. The 4x4 works great in it, and it don't go fast, or pretty - but it always goes wherever I point it and whenever I ask!
Happy B-Day!

Man that's a great story! I drove a 73 Chevy 1/2 PU for 16 years after that I found a 73 GMC the same truck, same color with less rust. Drove it for another 5 years. They both had the same shell camper top on them. When I got the GMC I parked them next to each other and swapped all my lifetime warranty parts. No one knew how I got more than half the rust off on the Chevy not realising it was a different truck! I drove them to work in construction parking lots full of mud so no sense in having anything nice. The guys used to tease me about the rust but I told them every time I washed it, it got lighter! Ha!
Have a great weekend!
Mike
