oil pressure gauge

Hi all, with the nice weather on sunday went and got a new battery for the camaro cause im gettin itchy!!! started it up for the first time in a few weeks and seemed to have a problem with the oil gauge. The car is stock besides a borla exhaust. Its got 57k miles on it and i never modified anything so i its not from me doing modifications or hacking wires. When idleing its at 60, when i rev the motor the gauge shoots up above 60 almost to the little oil symbol. Basicly its like the pin or the indicator whatever you call it was removed and advanced higher, but like i stated the cluster has never been worked on. Is there some sort of sensor or something i could replace? thanks al

Re: oil pressure gauge

If it was cold - the oil pressure will read higher - cold oil is thick, makes greater pressure. At op temps the oil thins out and the pressure decreases.

But yes, you can replace the oil pressure sender - assuming your car is a 1989 (from your name), it should be just above the oil filter. Some cars also had one on the china wall, just to driver side of the distributor. IF YOUR CAR has the one at the distributor, chances are that is the one you need to replace. Make sure the one you get from auto parts store matches on wires/connectors before you buy it, as well as the size of the fitting - the one at the distributor has a much smaller fitting on the end.

Re: oil pressure gauge

My oil is at around 30lbs pressure at operating temperature (it fluctuates +-3 or 4lbs).

When I start the car it's at 60. It also jumps when I press the gas, that's normal I think. I suggest to let it warm up first and then tell us what it's at. It's very possible the oil pressure sender is not working properly as mine was when I bought the car. It's about 45 bucks from GM I think, but atleast you'll get 100% accurate readings after that! But try idling once it's warmed up before buying a new one.

Re: oil pressure gauge

thx for the replys, but its def. not how it should be. I get what your saying about when reving and when its cold, but its def. not what that. If im driving down the road at like 1500 rpm at like 30 or whatever its PINNED all the way into the rpm gauge. way past where it should be even if it was reading high. at idle it drops down to 60. Nothing changes after i let it warm up and drive around. The gauge was reading fine last year and i didnt touch a thing over the winter. maybe ill just try the sending unit like u guys said... and camaronewbie, whats a china wall?

You probably have an open ground in the dash at the oil gage.
