Installed LED dash lights...Now i got problems.

Ok so i ordered some Green led bulbs for my 87 camaro's dash cluster to add some style. I had no trouble installing the bulbs but once i had the cluster plugged in i had to wiggle it to get them to come on. I saw them flash on briefly and then they went out. I checked the cluster fuse which is a 5amp and it had blown. Once i replaced that they turned on. i tried all of the other dash componets such as the blinkers. They would come on but be more delayed than usual. so with one blinker on I tried the headlights. Now the radio shut off along with the dash lights. When i turn the lights off all goes back to how it was. I Now try the hazards and they do not work. All electronics have worked and were working before i did the swap. Could i possibly have shorted something by wiggling the cluster with the interior lights on? If so what is on the cluster circuit and the radio circuit that could have gotten damaged that i need to replace?

That’s because the standard blinker is current sensitive.

You can replace it with a solid state blinker to speed up the blinking to normal.

You apparently moved/shorted something/broke a ground connection.

Recheck the area you were working on for pinched/broken wires/insulation rub-thru/improperly seated connector.

Re: Works In A Pinch

Added bonus... The car will not turn over. No power is going to the engine and now the blinkers will not work at all nor will my radio. Only dash lights work and key alarm. Something is shorting out badly across a lot of different circuits. Ill check the fuse blockand see if maybe something is crossing a few connections. Any other ideas? LEDs are not causing the problem because i can take the cluster completely out and same symptoms happen. Battery is not dead either.

Bogus Bonus

OK your priority has changed big time.

Check the seating of the connectors near the steering column.

Probe the
thick yellow wire coming out of one of those connectors for 12 volts when you try to start the engine.

Happy Racing!

Re: Bogus Bonus

ok put the batt charger on the battery and its charging now. bat was down to 7% full. once it got up towards 70 the radio and ac controls/fan started to work again. still having same issues tho. checked all connections. The only abnormality i saw was in a plastic control box where the haz blinker is along with two other modules behind the aldl port. The solder on the back of the circuit board was bridging two componet pads. i will get a picture of it and well see if that would cause the issue. Another location where my problem may be is in the dimmer switch itself. That was on when the fuse blew and is the activator for the weird dome light flashing with the blinkers when they worked.

Re: Installed LED dash lights...Now i got problems.

Problem solved. Batt was low thus the weird stuff happening. Dom light has always slightly blinked with turn signal but its way more noticable with low voltage. Should have figured with having subs in the car that the bat would drain really fast. all is working now and put back together. LEDS were a great idea. Thanks for your help. I should have made 100% sure the battery was good before taking everything apart. lesson learned!
