My 1991 RS has a worn ignition cylinder. In addition to that, the VATS module was bad and, long story short, we've bypassed the VATS at the ECM. Car runs great, however, we only have 1 ignition key and the cylinder tends to be fussy when turning it or removing the key.

Since I don't need the VATS anymore, is there another lock cylinder that will work with the 1991? I checked at Autozone and compared the 1991 to the 1989 and there is a very noticeable difference in length (1991 is longer by about 1/2")

Has anybody tried swapping out the VATS cylinder with another GM non-VATS cylinder with any luck?

 

there is the older style in my 91 bird. like that when i got it though.

 

Did the 91 birds originally have the VATS? Does yours use a plain key now?

 

yes, originally vats they started vats in 89 in thirdgens.and yes it has a plain old key.
