re-wiring knock sensor

since the knock sensor broke off and the threads are stuck in the block, i decided to put the new knock sensor on the opposite side of the block (driver side)

so, know i have to extend the wiring to reach the other side. my question is, how do i measure the thickness or find out what gauge the wiring is to splice it?

i was also thinking about just ordering a new pigtail, since it will be the right wiring and connect that to it. but not too sure how much slack it will be, and if it will be enough.

and also, if i just get some wiring from the local hardware or parts store, is there a specific type of wiring im supposed to use? once i get it wired and connected im prolly just gonna shrink wrap it and call it a day.

Re: re-wiring knock sensor

Could email these folks and ask how much wire comes with their $9 connector: http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/761/3658

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there's anything special about the wire itself - I think, like temp sensor, the knock sensor just sends a ground signal to the ECM, probably at different resistances to tell the ECM what it's "sensing". Just make sure you get a good connection between the old wire and new connector, and I'd just use the same size or slightly larger wire - it's pretty small, like 18, 20, 22 gauge - you should be fine with 18ga wire.

Re: re-wiring knock sensor

thanks for the link. hmmm, i think it says something about 6 inches of wire...not gonna be enough.

or, i would need like 3 of those. Think i might be better off getting some wire, im just hoping i can maybe cut a piece off and pair up the size. true, it does look like a really small gauge wire so thats a good area to start.

yea, I had a friend come over today and he sealed up the busted threads and hole on the original side location so all i gotta do now is run the wire over and fill it up with some water/coolant and she should run. hopefully this will fix the wretched code 43 and my engine wont bog out anymore after this. cant wait.
