Re: Spare key replace???

They have a machine. They put the key in. It reads the resistance. Thier are certain #'s for the chips. They look up the key #, pull out the key. Cut it to fit and your set to go. Your local dealer can do this too for about 30 dollars.

Re: Spare key replace???

GM used those chiped keys an ALOT of cars, so they arent hard to find. Pretty much any place that cuts keys will have a key blank for a GM chipped key. Not all of them will have the machine to read the chip resistance though. But you can do that yourself with a multimeter.

Re: Spare key replace???

When I went to Ace they said they didn't have any blanks that even came close. I had my VATS disabled so it didn't matter what the resistance was, but they still couldn't make one. I do have a spare key that I got when the switch was replaced after some idiot tried to steal my car by hammering a screwdriver in the switch so that the key wouldn't fit any longer. the spare key doesn't have a resistor so I can keep it in my wallet.

Re: Spare key replace???

They have VATS and non-VATS GM key on ebay. IF your VATS is disabled, you may be able to use the regular key which is cheaper.
