86 z28 no motor can i still test the starter?

hey just wondering my car has no motor but if i connect the starter wires and B+ to it then use a jumper cable from the housing of the starter to a good ground the electrical in the car and the starter should work when i turn the key just like if the motor was there correct? thanks ps im just trying to ensure the starter will crank because sometimes i have an issue with it possibly VATS so if i can fix it or bypass it before i drop the motor in its one more thing off the list .

Sure - batt pos to large termional, a good ground to batt neg, and another batt pos to smaller terminal. Or, since the starter is out of the car, can have it tested for free about any auto parts store.

Re: 86 z28 no motor can i still test the starter?

the test method you plan to use will work fine-just
have someone hold the starter when you test it or place
it on some cardboard or something so the wires don't
short out when the starter "kicks"
BTW no VATS on '86s-IIRC,VATS came out on the '89s
