couple of wire gauge questions ...

So I'm replacing the red discharge cable at the rear of the alternator
, I believe it s a 6 gauge wire then it reduces to a 16 Gage " maybe " then it ends a junction block next to the battery. I have bought 3ft of 6 gauge wire and seems bigger than the stock wire. My question is do I need the disable link or no? And how can I reduce my wire from 6 gauge to a small enough gauge yo fit on the junction post?

Re: couple of wire gauge questions ...

Fusible links are 1/2 the size of the wire they protect, so 6ga cable will use a 12ga link

IMHO its better to put a fuse on each individual circuit protecting the end device rather than a commonly blown out and troublesome to replace link at the beginning

Where can I buy a fuseable link, and would you happen to know the gauge of the wire after the link, not the big one, the smaller one ?

Re: couple of wire gauge questions ...

Half the size = 3 wire gauges

Wire sizes are logarithmic; just like decibels of audio or RF signal strength. 3db is a halving or doubling of power. Wire gauges work the same way.

Fusibles should ordinarily be 3 or 4 wire gauges smalller than the wire they protect. Your alt wire should have been about #10; meaning the FL should be #13 or #14. Given that #13 is togh to find at the store, #14 will prbobaly have to do. They should also be made of some kind of high-temp insulation, not just the regular PVC like other wire, otherwise they have a nasty habit of catching fire and dripping molten burning blobs of goo onto other flammable things, with predictably disastrous results. Hypalon, cross-linke polyethylene (trade type XHHW-2 is suitable), stuff like that.

Or, you can just go to the store and buy a FL that matches what you need.
