engine fan trouble (stays-on)

Hello everyone, I am from belgium so excuse me for some bad english language please. I own a 91 pontiac firebird 3.1 litre V6. With the ignition on, my fan keeps on turnin even with cold engine, we replaced the relay but that didn't solve the problem since the relay still receives signal from the green/white and brown wire. The complete airco was removed and the connections disgarded, should i bridge some connections ? Even If I remove the temp sensors connections, the problem remains. What fault could there be to the ECM module, the check engine light doesn't indicate a problem. Thank you if you could help me out. Greetings from small Belgium (europe)

Re: engine fan trouble (stays-on)

First off, welcome from across the pond

Next, figure out what circumstances the fan engages for. EX: does it come on with the key on engine off or only when the engine is running? Start up immediately or does it take a short time to begin?

If it comes on with the key on engine off, then either a previous owner rigged the relay to come on with the IGN or there is a dead short to the dk grn/wht wire

Here is a diagram to begin troubleshooting the problem

Id begin with a multimeter testing for dead grd from the dk grn/wht wire

thanks pocket for your quick reply. The fan comes on from the moment the ignition is on, motor doesn't need to run. Alson thanks for the diagram. I will check for dead grd.
greetings from rainy belgium

Ground the dark blue wire that used to go to the AC pressure switch.

Run the cold engine for at least 2 minutes.

Did the fan go off?

Re: engine fan trouble (stays-on)

I grounded the dark blue wire and took a ride, fan was running al the time, i must keep looking for another cause , could the ECM be defective at the fan output without blinking the check engine light ?

Yes the relay driver in the ECM can be shorted and not throw a code.

Re: engine fan trouble (stays-on)

I took the car to a garage and had the ECM read out, it seems that the ecm does NOT sends the signal to the relais for action, must be some grounded somewhere else. The powersteering pressure switch is also disgarted should i ground this one too, or not. Any one has the complete schedule for the ecm numbers ? I would try to disconnect the positive wire that comes from the AC command switch (lightgreen/black ?)

Re: engine fan trouble (stays-on)

The ECM is the only control for the relay ground, 91 v6.

Re: engine fan trouble (stays-on)

I already tried a lot of things, still no solution. I have two connectors hanging loose, can somebody tell me there function (connection) They Come from the same harness as the temperature sensor(single green). There's a round one with a light blue and a lightgreen/black wire and there's one with a green and a black wire. I guess one is from the power steering and the other from the A/C compressor. I don't find the right connections/colours on any shedule. Maybe I should ground or shorten one of these ? Remeber there's no A/C and also the power steering was modified without pressure switch. Thanks
