Changed starter but won't turnover

Hey guys, my dad and I recently changed the starter on our '89 Trans Am. We thought this might be the problem when, you turn the key the guages will move but the car will not turnover. Even with the new starter and solenoid, it is doing the same thing. Any clues besides a bad fuse?

Did you put power direct to the old starter to see if it worked 1st before replacing it?

By the sound of it you have a problem with the control wiring to the starter.
Bad Ign switch , bad safety switch , starter enable relay, etc
Power from key has to go through all those to get to starter.

Run a wire from batt Pos terminal to the starter solenoid and see if engine cranks.
If it does then your problem is as above.
If it doesn't then you have a problem with the heavy cable from batt ( bad , dirty connections )
or the ground cable for engine.

Typical GM starter circuit

Re: Changed starter but won't turnover

my money would be on the vats relay (also called the starter enable relay)

mine was being tempermental, and I bought a brand new delco one. It worked worse than the old one, so I just bypassed the dang thing. It was easy, and free. Car has started everytime since then.

Bad fusible link, forgot to reattach a fusible link, bad starter

If VATS worked before, I wouldnt consider it a possibility
