92 Firebird not starting, Help please?
92 Firebird not starting, Help please?
Okay so I have a 92 firebird V8 305 TBI and it just randomly stopped starting. When the problem happened, it would have to be cranked quite a bit for it to eventually start, but now it doesnt do anything...just turns in silence without a crank or anything. I took my starter into autozone and they tested it and said it was fine so i then replaced my old battery that was gonna go out anytime. The problem still occurs. My dad and I took a volt meter to the start area and one of the posts that go to the starter is not getting power, so it seems as if the starter is not getting complete power or something. So we believe its an electrical issue and noone i know has knowledge about electrical when it comes to starting issues....Any suggestions?

So what is it?

It doesn't crank ( turn ) or it doesn't start ( fire up ).
Two completely different situations ( and problems )

disconnect the purple wire from the starter solenoid and have someone turn the key and see if it gets 12v. if it does then use a screw driver to contact between the batery post and the solenoid post on the starter and see if it spins. if it doesnt spin, its either bad, or not getting juice from the battery. if the purple wire isnt getting 12v with the key turned, then you have an electrical issue in the cranking circuit.
btw, when you jump contacts with the screw driver, its gonna spark, so dont be alarmed when it does.

Maybe this can help. Got it out of a 88 Firebird service manual. Should work on a 92 too.

Most likely blew a fusible link

The link feeding the IGN switch and fuseblock drive the starter solenoid, so see if you have 12v at either

Aight so my dad and I did what travis suggeseted and when the screwdriver method was performed, it spun. So the starters alright. We then replaced the fusible link on the starter and no luck. It still doesnt start-up, so were thinking its in the wiring somewhere under the dash or the ignition switch. Thanks for the diagrams ill keep them in mind and see if they can help.

Re: 92 Firebird not starting, Help please?
Hey, I have the same problem. I have a 92 Firebird, 305 engine, automatic transmission. Started having the problem about two years ago and has gotten worse. Started when I would put the key in and turn, nothing would happen. The lights would come on but the starter wouldn't turn. I would wait about 10 minutes and then the car would start. Didn't seem to matter what the weather was like or if the engine was hot or not. Started off doing it about once every two months and now does it about once a week. Replaced the starter about 3 years ago. Have taken it to about 6 mechanics and no one seems to know what the issue is. Plus when I take it in to the shop, it doesn't do it. I love the car but I am going to sell it if I can't figure out the problem. From what I have been reading, a lot of the firebirds have this problem.

you having to wait 10 min before itll start makes it sound like an intermittent VATS issue, does your security light come on and stay on when it wont start?
