In heaps of trouble. VATS

Hi guys.

To make a long story short. Bought a 1988 Trans Am GTA. It doesn´t crank or give fuel.

Of course I thought it was the classic resistance issue and bought the stuff needed. Looked for the "orange" wire coat in the steering column but could not find.

Found some modules/control boxes and some cut and spliced wires. Anyways, took some pics.

Can anyone please tell me what's on these pics.

Please help me

looks like a old alarm system, maybe a vats modulator box? lunch money !!! and the orange wires you are asking about are in the bottom picture with the picture with the heat shrink on them.

Thanks! But it looks like they've already been modified in some way. Should I try cutting them and putting the resistance there?

If you can't figure it out, this worked perfectly for me.

Thanks! This could help. But only If I know what previous modifications are? Don't know what's been done already.

Re: In heaps of trouble. VATS

that is how it is bypassed than. There are 3 ways to bypass the vats memcal reprogramming, a modulator or measuring the resistance in the key and installing the correct resistance across the orange wires.check the power and ground of your modulator, vats was in some 88 and all 89 up.

Thanks.

I measured the resistance in the key and it reads 630. Bought the resistance but could not locate the orange wires until you pointed them out.

Do you think it will work the simple way although it's already been modified?

Re: In heaps of trouble. VATS

if the passkey module is still there and working that yes that bypass will work you would want too disconnect the modulator box.

Thanks alot!

One (two) more question:

The module on the first picture, is it the ECM?

Why have wires been cut from it?

I cut the alarm system out. Now trying to rewire everything.

But why does my key read .630 ?? I can't find that as a valid pellet resistance. Doesn't fit to any of the 15 key codes.

The old alarm system was hooked to a flip switch and a small button in the dash. Can anyone tell me why??

Thanks, Peter.

Re: In heaps of trouble. VATS

The flip switch was more than likely a select switch for modes in the alarm and the switch was a reset.

Ok, but why does my key read .630 ohms? That doesn't fit any pellet value.

Was it pellet 3 originially and somehow faded?? Sorry for stupid question. Just getting confused.

How do I know the correct ohm value that the passkey module keeps?

Re: In heaps of trouble. VATS

I'm not sure why the resistance on your key is .630 but looks like you need to start within the #3 range and see if you can get it too bypass and maybe try within the #2 range if that fails.

Re: In heaps of trouble. VATS

Thanks guys. I appreciate this.

Still wondering, everyone talks about white wires to solder the resistance to. In my case the wires are yellow.... Anyone know why?

Peter.
