Anyone else's 89 TA Tach not accurate? Options?

Hey All.

I've been reading the forums trying to find what I can do about the Tach. Alot of documentation mentions electral fixes if the tach is reading too high, but not much here for the tach reading low.

I have a 89 TA GTA 5sp, and though I am still accelerating, the tach doesn't want to climb past the low 4k.

While I would like to keep the stock cluster if possible, is there any way to make this sucker more accurate?

(I don't actually know what the RPMs are, I just got this car, and am driving it while working out in the Bay area California... so all my tools, extra tach, etc are at home in Minnesota). I don't mind tinkering out here, but want to make sure I've got direction before lugging tools thorugh airport security. I get felt up enough as it is!

So. Looks like I need to:
  1. Hook up an aftermarket tach to find out what the Engine R's actually are
  2. Profit.

Any Advice?

Okay, I found a site that let me put in gear ratios to calculate what the engine R's are at by speed. not the best option, but its better then reading a tach that is 1500rpms off.

If the tach stops moving up suddenly, it’s a mechanical problem in the tach.

If the tach continues to move up albeit not enuff, you can use the fix you read about.

However when it comes time to adjust the potentiometer, dial it in the opposite direction.
