blower motor wiring problem!!!

So of course my heat decided to stop working during our little blast of snow over the last couple of days. I knew my blower motor was going bad because I always had it turned to high and it still barely blew. So the first thing I did was replace the motor. plugged it in and boom, nothing. I tested the motor and the motor is fine. I started thinking there was a wiring issue, while browsing the area i noticed the previous owners absolute cluster**** or wiring and splicing and looping and running 2 relays that would loop back to eachother. I found the proper wiring diagram and rewired everything through the new resistor and new relay I got. Still nothing. I traced wires back to the switch and tested the switch, I have power going to the switch. I put the switch to off and tested the high speed wire, nothing(obviously) then turned it to high and retested, got power going there.

If i hook ONLY the high speed wire straight to the motor and then ground it, nothing happens, still.

I have spent the last 2 days tracing wires, testing wires, testing the motor over and over(it still spins when i hook it straight to the battery so it hasnt blown) I've checked double checked and triple checked my wiring vs the wiring diagram and I have it dead on.

At this point i feel like i'm looking so deep into it i'm overlooking a simple fix. I've read nearly every thread i've come across about blower motors and taken suggestions from every single one.

Can anybody PLEASE help me figure out what i'm missing.

Does it work on the lower speeds, or just not on high? The high speed has a separate relay which you have undoubtedly discovered by now. The relay has it's own power source wire, fed thru a connector coming out of the loom at the firewall near the blower. This connector often goes o/c or melts.

Re: blower motor wiring problem!!!

I had nothing on any speed. I figured out my power problem, the "hot" wire was only hot when the car was in run, previous owner and spliced it into the incorrect wire.

Now i'm having problems wiring the relay correctly. Any pictures to show the correct wiring? I have the wiring diagram but I dont think i'm doing it correctly.

When i get everything hooked up I plug the fan in and it just stays on HIGH when the switch is set to off low medium or high. I dont mind having it only on HIGH(although all speeds would be nice) But i need to be able to turn it off.

Re: blower motor wiring problem!!!

Power to the blower in run only is correct. Remember the vent control slider needs to be in the off position while in run, to shut the blower off.

Sounds like you've still got the high speed relay connected wrong, so it's on all the time.

Have attached the circuit for my 86 fwiw, not sure of your year but probably the same. No pics I'm afraid, my po also messed with my wiring, I just put it back as per circuit.

Re: blower motor wiring problem!!!

Alright so I got it to turn off. Turns out the control lever was getting snagged and wouldn't go all the way to off.

I have everything wired up to the relay per your diagram and still only work on high. I ordered a new control switch for Monday. My thought is the switch isn't changing when turned and is staying in the high position. This is the last piece that I haven't replaced yet so I guess I will keep my fingers crossed.

For now I have a dummy switch hooked up so it's either on or off but I needed something since tonight decided to be the night to go below zero.

Thanks for your help! I will let you know how Monday goes when I get the switch installed.
