Fixed my temp gauge, needle was stuck. Question on how i fixed it

The needle on my temp gauge was getting stuck behind the metal piece, u removed it started the car and the needle jumped. As the car ran the needle move. What I did tonfix the probelm was I put a small piece of foam between the metal plate and gauge so it stops he needle from going all the way down and getting stuck again. Will this have any effect on the gauge? I didn't want to bend the plate and I was afraid of the needle bc I didnt want to break it.

What you did was ok. What these cars were wired to do was when you had the key all the way in the start position, the temp gauge is slowly supposed to sweep to max, and when the engine starts, the temp gauge sweeps back to 100.

Well now that these cars are over 20 years old, the resistance in the gauge is not there anymore, and so they flop around so hard that they get stuck.

Youre options are to find a NOS gauge, deal with it sticking, or do what you did.

Hope this helps.

I actually have a tripod gauge that I bought with the car. The previous owner disconnect it bc he didn't like it.
