gauge cluster problems

ok so im new to the forum and a proud new owner of an 86 iroc. that being said the car i bought pretty much sat for the past ten years in a garage. One of the bugs i found while trying to wake her from her 10 year nap is that the gauges seem to be out, i have dash lights just not properly functioning gauges. for example my tach says my car idles between 35-4500 rpm, my fuel gauge is stuck on holy **** your full, my battery volt meter doesnt work, i believe my temp gauge works still and i think my oil pressure still works as well as my speedo. does anyone know if this is fixable or am i looking at buying a new cluster???

Re: gauge cluster problems

Redline gauges.com they restore and re-build gauges. They do whole clusters of many other GM cars and probably do ours also. They are very good. I saw them on a TV show a few years back and they did a 70 SS Chevelle and 67 427 Corvette gauge re-do and they looked brand new and were re-calibrated.

Gage Rage

Here’s how to test the fuel gage.

Remove the sender wire going to the gage.

Tape the bare end of the sender wire and put it aside.

Use a potentiometer with a value of 100Ω or the closest you can find.

Connect one end the potentiometer to the gage from the location you removed the sender.

Connect the wiper of the potentiometer to ground.

Turn the key to RUN.

Slowly adjust the potentiometer from 0Ω to 90Ω.

If the gage is bad it will exhibit the problem you have.

If the gage is good it will display a smooth transition from one end of it’s range to the other.

Therefore the problem is with the sender or wiring going to it.

You can use a loose potentiometer, or you can throw together a quick little panel like this one.
