Could this be a clutch safety swtich or ignition fuse issue?

Hello everyone... I hope your all doing better then I am! I got the Z28 out yesterday and have run into a few electrical problems it seems. Its a 1985 Z28 T5 with a swapped 350... the owner before me spent alot of money on the vehicle.

It starts with me leaving work and driving to Tim Hortons for a cup of joe. Everything is running well and functioning properly, I park and enter the store. To my surprise when I returned my clutch petal was slack and swinging on it's hinge. On the floor I notice a metal clip and a bunch of small plastic pieces. I knew after contorting myself under the dash I could see that the connecting rod had come loose off the clutch petal. Convinced that I could slip it back on and jerry rig secure it until I could get home, so I went about removing the plastic cover revealing all the wiring so I could have more access. After a while I got it... the clutch felt great. I went to start the vehicle and it would not start. Turn the key and the dash buzzes. Battery is brand new and has a charge. It was dark and hard to see so I got a friend tow me home.

This is where things get a little confusing. When I was home and got some light under the dash, I noticed something odd. There was a small black wire coming from the fire wall and was wrapped around the clutch petal near the top a few times. The end of the wire was not connected to anything. Also on the fuse box, there was a male spade connector that was not connected to anything plugged into one of the IGN spots (I do not recall witch ) like shown in the picture below.

I don't know why but I attached the wire to the spade connecter and plugged it into the top IGN slot. When I did that, I blew a 15fuse for the dash... Im assuming the buzzing I mentioned eariler comes from the dash because it no longer was making that noise. Im not so much worried about that as much as I can't figure this out. Maybe I pulled something else loose while removing the plastic cover or attaching the clutch to the petal? I though it was the clutch safety switch so I tried to to gap the connection on the male plug with paper clip metal, but I am aware that might not be sufficient enough.

I need to use the vehicle to get to easter dinner on Saturday.. does anyone have any ideas/ trouble shooting tips to eliminate some potential problems?

Thanks alot.

Or perhaps the black wire was connected to one of the battery slots on the right side of the fuse box? That would make sense... depending whats on the other end of the wire.

Try a serious jumper on the clutch switch connector instead of the paper clip.

Make sure you’re on the harness side, not the switch side.

There are no fuses in the fuse block pertaining to cranking of the starter even tho there is a CRANK fuse.

There is, however a Fusible Link involved.

Therefore if the jumper does not allow the starter to crank use a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) to probe, one at a time, each of the wires that you were jumping.

Is there power on either of those wires when you try to crank?

Happy Racing!

Re: Could this be a clutch safety swtich or ignition fuse issue?

Just got back from a nice cruise!

I took the clutch safety out and cleaned it. After installing it again I noticed that it isn't staying bolted tight so I pulled the safety towards myself during the starting process and it fired right up. Im so glad it was nothing serious... I have to wait until tomorrow to buy some proper fasteners for the two problems but for now I have it driving again!

I find this out after going through everything with a voltmeter.
