RPM gauge reading too high

Car: Blue 1991 Camaro RS
Engine: 3.1 litre V6
Transmission: 700R4
RPM gauge reading too high

I heard my distributor may be the cause of my RPM gauge reading in the red when I barely give my Camaro gas. Its obviously not revving up that high. Would the distributor cause this?
