Update Fusible Links > 4 Circuit Auxiliary Fuse Block
? for the wiring experts.
88 Firebird Formula 5.0 TBI car
I would like to get away from the factory fusible links that are down by the starter and update them to a more modern solution.
Has anyone removed and updated the fusible links to say something like maxi fuses with a 4 circuit auxilirary sub panel box mounted under the hood?
If so, any recommendations to a 4 circuit sub panel kit from Painless or other supplier and the proper amperage rating of the fuses to replace the stock fusible links. I see Painless offers some 3 circuit and 7 circuit blocks? but not a 4 circuit block?
Painless has a 3 circuit heavy duty aux block with a 70 amp capacity listed here
http://www.painlessperformance.com/w...rchField=70114
There are 4 wires that connect to the starter, but 3 factory fusible links, 1 of the 3 fusible links is a Y connection with 2 wires.
The stock factory fusible Y connector, one of the wires is the main ignition feed wire so that will be a fairly high amperage fuse.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Solution 4 No Problem
The fusible links have the advantage over “more modern solutions”, which is the location they can be installed.
You need the protection device to be as close as possible to the source of power.
Installing a fuse block requires wires to be run to the main power cable.
If those new wires short to ground at the unprotected side a fire is possible.
Also, links should never blow unless a crash causes a short, or someone working on the car causes a short, or something else highly unusual, etc.

Fwiw, my factory fusible links were long gone via a po's engine swap; all the power wires were connected directly to the alt post. So I did this:
